I was a non-vegetarian till 6 months ago.Around that time I started practicing meditation.I learned from web that for better concentration and for achieving success in spiritual life, I need to follow a vegetarian diet.So I stopped taking meat from that day.It was a bit difficult in the beginning, saying “no” to your favorite foods. But with my will power I continued. Now so many people asks me why I turned into a vegetarian. This article is an answer for them.
Albert Einstein said this: “I am living without fats, without meat, without fish, but am feeling quite well this way. It always seems to me that man was not born to be a carnivore.”
Another quote from Einstein is : “A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the ‘Universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
Those who believes in religions,I will start with Christianity.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.”
Jesus has always sided with mercy, kindness, compassion and love.Do you think factory farms and slaughterhouses support Jesus’s messages in any way.I dont think so.
According to Hindu Vedas we should avoid non-vegitarian foods, because they induce “Rakshasa Guna”(guna means character and Rakshasa means violence) in you.Today world is full of violence. When we kill animals or hurt someone we don’t feel any mercy towards them.It becomes a normal act or us.When you strictly follow a vegetarian diet the “violence character” in you , will die. Yoga practitioners are also said to follow vegetarian diet because yoga needs your mind to be calm and free from thoughts. With a non-vegetarian diet you cannot concentrate on “Sadhana”(in meditation).
Buddhism also has supported vegetarian diet.Even though Buddha didn’t ask his followers to be strictly vegetarians,he used to say “How can a monk, who hopes to become a deliverer of others, himself be living on the flesh of sentient beings?”.To counter this people say that Bhuddha was a non-vegetarian.It is true upto an extend.Bhuddha consumed alms food offered by lay followers, whom they encountered “randomly” from place to place. Though the Buddha never requested specific food to be offered, He spoke against the intentional acquiring of meat for him.But at the same time,he doesn’t want to say “no” to his poor followers when they gave him meat. Buddha was a vegetarian at heart.
Jainism also recommends strict Vegetarianism. They consider the practice of vegetarianism as an instrument for the practice of nonviolence and peaceful, cooperative coexistence.
Apart from these religions Taoism and Zoroastrianism also support vegetarian diet. Many of the religions doesn’t strictly ask for you to be a vegetarian but they do believe that being vegetarian is a good practice.
Another point to remember is that animals come in the food chain in the middle or at the top.Plants are at the bottom, and they are called producers because they are able to use light energy from the Sun to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide and water.Animals are called consumers, because they cannot make their own food so they must eat plants and/or other animals. The point you should remember here is that when a herbivore eats, only a fraction of the energy (that it gets from the plant food) becomes new body mass; the rest of the energy is lost as waste or used up by the herbivore to carry out its life processes (e.g., movement, digestion, reproduction). This means that we use more of nature’s resource to live our life when we eat meat, than vegetables.
Though humans are said to be Carnivores, the human anatomy clearly shows that we are Vegetarians by nature.Follow this link for more.
Following a vegetarian diet is not that difficult as you think. For the survival of one human,we kill so many animals. Is that a right thing to do?Don’t they deserve a better consideration?
Some may think that vegetarians are weak compared to others. But this is not true.Mac Danzig is an American professional mixed martial arts fighter and instructor, and is a former lightweight champion for the King of the Cage and Gladiator Challenge mixed martial arts organizations. There are many martial artists, body builders and athletes who are vegans. So you need not kill an animal for becoming strong.
